Marble Falls got its name because of three natural rock waterfalls located just west of the bridge. In 1854, a surveyor named Adam R. Johnson saw Marble Falls and had a vision that he would one day turn it into one of the best places to live in Texas. Years later, Mr. Johnson returned to the area blinded from a gunshot wound in the Civil War. Although his physical vision was impaired, his vision of what Marble Falls could become was still very clear. On July 12, 1887, Mr. Johnson purchased half of Marble Falls, and controlled the rest of the original Baker Grant which included the Falls area. He turned Marble Falls into what it is today. The original Falls have now been covered by Lake Marble Falls and can only be seen when the lake is intentionally lowered.
